The Do Not Pack List To Avoid Hefty Baggage Fees
Packing for a trip can be challenging. There are so many considerations in deciding what to pack and what to leave home because space is always limited and extra baggage weight fees can be hefty. Do you take your precious jewelry? Your hair dryer? What about precious jewelry? Are the rules different when you are taking a cruise?
Paul Stewart, founder of MyBaggage (a luggage shipping service), has compiled a list of items that you should consider twice before adding to your suitcase.
1-Hardcover Books

2- Boots & Heavy Shoes

It may be tempting to bring your favorite pair of boots to create a “look,” but heavy footwear, like boots, or shoes with heavy platform wedges, can also take up real estate and add unnecessary weight to your baggage.
A good strategy is to wear your heaviest pair of shoes on the plane and minimize the other shoes so you take only essentials. I usually opt for one pair of walking shoes and one pair for another for dress. Rothy’s are a great option because they are featherweight.
3- Full-Sized Toiletries

Almost every type of toiletry comes in a mini-size. It may be a bit more expensive but taking full-size toiletries is unnecessary if you want to travel light. Once you buy a mini, you can refill it when you get home and re-use it. If you aren’t fussy, you can forgo packing your own shampoo and cream rinse and use the ones provided at your destination.
4- Multiple Electronic Gadgets

Just because you have every electronic gadget doesn’t mean you must take all of them on your trip. Most laptops are heavy, and extra chargers, adapters, speakers, etc. can add to the weight. Instead, think of a strategy that allows you to eliminate redundant tech items. Will your tablet serve your purpose?
5- Excess Clothing

There are many ways to streamline the apparel you take on a trip. I always choose lightweight fabrics (and less bulky ones) when I pack. For example, you might leave your heavy jeans at home or wear them on the plane. Choosing a neutral color scheme also allows you to mix and match. Many experienced travelers opt for a minimalist capsule wardrobe.
One study showed that most travelers only wear 60 percent of the clothing they pack. Resist the urge to prepare for every contingency—it will just weigh you down!
One Last Tip

Invest in an inexpensive baggage scale before you leave home. It will prevent any surprises when you get to the airport and allow you to eliminate or redistribute items at home rather than at the airport if your bags are over weight.
