American Cruise Lines Offers First All-Domestic Great Lakes Cruise
American Cruise Lines recently announced three new “All U.S.” (fully domestic) cruise itineraries on the Great Lakes.
The cruises begin, end, and remain in the U.S. for their entire length. This marks the first time any cruise line has offered a Great Lakes cruise without requiring a border crossing or passport.
American-owned and operated American Cruise Lines is the largest cruise line in the U.S., with 21 ships currently operating on rivers and coastal waterways. However, this will be the first time the line will sail the lakes.
Although Great Lakes cruising has a history spanning over five decades, it is experiencing unprecedented growth as more Americans opt to cruise closer to home. As a result, numerous cruise lines, such as American, are adding new ships and itineraries to these routes.
Why Americans Are Sailing Closer To Home
The Great Lakes, an interconnected system of freshwater lakes, are situated along the U.S.-Canadian border. This inland waterway comprises five lakes, ordered from west to east: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. They account for nearly one-fifth of the world’s freshwater lakes.
The lakes border the U.S. states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, as well as the Ontario province of Canada.
Here are some of the reasons why Great Lakes cruises are so popular:.
Cost: Domestic flights are generally more economical than long-haul international flights. In many cases, travelers can even take a bus, train or drive to the ports of departure for Great Lakes cruises.
Convenience: Cruising close to home feels easier without the hassles of crossing borders, exchanging currency, or adjusting to foreign languages and customs.
Security: Older travelers, in particular, may feel more confident traveling domestically in the event of an unexpected health emergency. Traveling abroad in international waters amid global tensions and political instability is another safety concern.
Celebrating the USA: July 2026 will mark the 250th birthday of the United States and many Americans (and foreigners) want to enrich their understanding of its history and heritage. Even many seasoned travelers aren’t familiar with all the riches that different regions of the country have to offer. Great Lakes cruising allows them to experience varied landscapes, historical sites and cultural attractions.
Three New American Cruise Lines Itineraries
The new Great Lakes domestic itineraries, which will be aboard the line’s newest small ship, 130-passenger American Patriot, will sail between May and August 2026.
These include a 9-day itinerary visiting the Thousand Islands and Niagara Falls; a 9-day itinerary highlighting Lake Michigan, Green Bay inlet, and the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula; and the line’s signature 14-day cruise traveling 800 miles through three of the Great Lakes (Erie, Huron, and Michigan).
The all-inclusive pricing includes a pre-cruise hotel stay, complimentary domestic airfare, small-group shore excursions, fine dining with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, enrichment lectures and entertainment, and tips, gratuities and port charges.
The cruises will be offered on May 22nd, May 29th, and August 27th, 2026. Additional dates will be announced for 2027. The sailing season on the Great Lakes typcially runs from late May through mid-September, but summer months promise warmer weather and sunnier days.
