The Wide Appeal of ‘Murder In’
As a foreign flick aficionado, I watched and enjoyed each of the 14 seasons of ‘Murder In’ that came before this one, and couldn’t wait for the new one to launch.
Who is this series for?
- Anyone who loves well-written, well-acted mysteries. Each episode is self-contained, so you don’t need to watch them in any order. The cast varies from episode to episode, as do the writers and directors.
- Anyone who wants to brush up on their French. You don’t need to know any French because the series is subtitled in English. But it does offer viewers the opportunity to listen to the language, refresh and expand their vocabulary.
- Anyone interested in French culture and traditions, which vary from place to place. You’ll learn about the art, architecture, customs, and specialty foods and drinks across France’s 18 administrative regions, including five overseas ones (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, and Réunion).
- Armchair travelers will discover and explore new places. Some episodes are set in large cities and other well-known places, but others are far off the beaten tourist track. They may well inspire a viewer’s next trip to France.
- The series is visually compelling to anyone who appreciates stunning scenery and cinematography (including aerial views) that showcase the beauty and diversity of France from the Alps to the Caribbean islands. You’ll also learn about the geography of France.
‘Murder In’ first aired on French television (France 3) in 2013. Each 90-minute episode, the length of a feature movie, is long enough to engage its audience and develop the characters and their backstories.

The compelling first episode of the “Murder In” series, set in Saint Martin, immediately captivated me.
The investigators’ journey uncovered a crime rooted in a native Taíno ritual, a practice dating back to Hispaniola before Christopher Columbus. This not only sparked our interest in Saint Martin as a travel destination but also prompted us to search for a Smithsonian magazine article to learn more about this lost society.
This experience wasn’t novel. It was similar to other episodes that couple entertainment and education encouraging viewers to do more research beyond the episode.
It’s clear why “Murder In” is one of the most-watched series on MHz Choice, a streaming service known for its excellent foreign and international content. Beyond the mysteries, each episode offers unique opportunities for inquisitive viewers to broaden their understanding of the people and culture of France.
