Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York) is an original musical about two lost souls who find each other and then themselves. This two-act play has all the elements of the best of Broadway: a heartfelt story that makes you laugh and leaves you smiling as you leave the theater.
Initially called The Season, the award-winning show by the talented British musical writing team of Jim Barne and Kit Buchan made its debut in 2019 in London’s West End. The pair is known for creating flawed characters who are believable.
A favorite with audiences and critics on both sides of the pond, Two Strangers recently garnered eight 2026 Tony Award nominations—Best Musical and Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Best Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Director of a Musical, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations of a Musical.
The Storyline
The story, set in New York City during the holiday season, is about two imperfect people who meet serendipitously when the bride’s sister meets the groom’s estranged son. Robin (the 26-year-old sister) is asked to pick up Dougal (the 25-year-old son) at JFK Airport. Robin is the prototype of the cynical, hassled New Yorker. Dougal is a naive, hyperactive first-time visitor to the city with rose-colored glasses.
When the bride asks her sister to pick up her elaborate, multi-tiered $2000 wedding cake in Brooklyn, Dougal tags along to help her carry it.
Over 48 hours, the connection between the protagonists of the two-person show changes as they come to understand each other. The twosome experience a relaxed post-wedding night of drunken revelry at The Plaza but without a romantic ending. Rather, both emerge changed with insight to help them move forward as individuals.
As the story unfolds, the same seemingly minimalist stage set that featured an airport luggage conveyor belt front and center is magically transformed with lights and small changes.
The Cast
It takes great talent for two actors to totally capture an audience’s attention without a backup ensemble. Robin is played by Christiani Pitts, who has appeared on stage and screen, including the Broadway shows King Kong and A Bronx Tale.
Dougal is played by Sam Tutty, the British actor who appeared as Evan in Dear Evan Hansen and starred in numerous other prior productions of Two Strangers.
Both characters are richly developed, and the witty score and energetic staging showcase their immense acting, vocal and dance talents.

About The Longacre Theater
The show is playing at the Longacre Theater, a New York icon that first opened in 1913. Located in the NYC Theater District at 220 West 48th Street, both the building’s interior and exterior are designated New York City landmarks.
