Traveling with Friends: Marlo and Me

As a friendship expert and psychologist, I recently had the chance to sit down with “That Girl” Marlo Thomas to discuss a wide range of friendship issues for her Internet video show, Mondays with Marlo.

One issue we talked about was traveling with friends, which is becoming an increasingly popular vacation option among people of all ages.

Any getaway with friends—whether with girlfriends, guys or other couples—requires thoughtful planning in anticipation of the trip. The group members need to agree upon a destination, budget and accommodations that work for everyone in the group. Probably the most important consideration in planning travel with friends, however, is choosing your tribe: finding a compatible group of fellow travelers whose company you will enjoy.

I told Marlo one important rule of thumb based upon my own experience is this: Never go on vacation with someone whom you can’t even stomach over lunch.

Love it Irene. And thanks for the reminder about not committing to anything longer than a lunch if a friend causes some stress.

Great post Irene. I love the slideshow with your make-over, what fun. I also agree, if you can enjoy a whole meal together, then you are off to a great start!

How fun to see you with “That Girl”. You both look fabulous, by the way. I’ve had some nice trips with a couple of good girlfriends over the years, but most of my travel is with my husband or solo. But I’m open to girlfriend/group getaways — once the lunch test is passed. 🙂

I was such a fan of “That Girl.” I chuckle when I remember the episode with her making Ketchup soup at the Automat. Cool that you got to meet her.
