Inside Ocean House: The Rumored Watch Hill Swift-Kelce Wedding Venue
The love affair that has captivated the world has sparked many rumors. The biggest question: When and where will Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tie the knot?
A recent article in Boston.com speculated that Ocean House, a five-star property at Watch Hill, an affluent summer enclave in Westerly, Rhode Island, might be the Taylor-Kelce wedding venue.
Having visited and stayed at Ocean House, I feel as qualified to weigh in on this rumor.
The Charms of Watch Hill
Since the 1800s, the natural beauty of Watch Hill has been a magnet for visitors with the means to spend their summers at the seaside—either as residents in the shingled, Victorian-style homes (many of them handed down over generations) or as guests at the handful of hotels and inns in the area.
These mansions were dubbed “cottages” by the Gilded Age millionaries who used them as summer cottages.
In 2023, Watch Hill had a population of 224 people (a 28% decline from the year before) and a median property value of $2 million. The area is about a 3-hour drive from Manhattan, two hours from Boston and 45 minutes from Providence and Newport.
Although it shares some similarities with Newport, it’s less ostentatious and better known for its refined, quiet luxury. Many of the homes sit on this peninsula at the southwesternmost tip of Rhode Island, surrounded on three sides by water and unspoiled beaches.
In addition to celebrities like Taylor Swift and Conan O’Brien, residents in the densely populated Watch Hill neighborhood are predominantly wealthy, lesser-known families who are protective of their privacy.
In a purchase mired in controversy, Taylor Swift paid $17.74 million in cash in 2013 for the historic 5-acre estate known as High Watch, previously owned by philanthropist and eccentric socialite Rebekah Harkness, which features 700 feet of private beachfront.
Ocean House Rhode Island: A Posh Seaside Escape
Ocean House Rhode Island is an iconic luxury Relais & Châteaux resort set on a bluff overlooking Block Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Like Swift’s property, it too has a stretch of white, sandy beach that is almost the same size (650 vs. 700 feet).
At a time when a growing number of hotels and resorts are owned and operated by faceless corporations, Ocean House stands out from the pack. This independently owned boutique property is intimate, with only 49 rooms and 20 signature suites. Because it has a total of only 69 units, it’s popular for destination wedding buyouts that limit access to the public.
The suites are actually individually owned residences within the main hotel building, rented out when not in use. The Ocean House Swift-Kelce rumors began circulating when a 4,696-square-foot, $20-million Penthouse unit was listed on the market.
The resort manages a collection of privately-owned luxury vacation homes, called “cottages,” that range in size from a bungalow that was formerly a schoolhouse to stately mansions that can accommodate multigenerational families. Scattered throughout the village but in close proximity to the resort, these properties offer privacy and space, along with all the privileges and services afforded to Ocean House guests.
The units in the Cottage Collection vary in size, location and cost. The one that my husband and I stayed in, Intercrest, offered light-filled rooms with expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Narragansett Bay on the other. It sits on the same footprint as the home built in 1898 for J.F. Champlin, the original proprietor of the Ocean House Hotel.
The 5,100-square-foot cottage had seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, an oversized gourmet kitchen with upscale appliances, living and dining rooms with ample seating, two entertainment areas with large-screen TVs, a laundry room, high-speed internet, and an elevator that affords easy access to its four levels.
Could The Ocean House Rhode Island Wedding Venue Rumors Be True?
When couples plan a wedding, they often want to choose a venue or destination that is meaningful to them. Taylor Swift has made peace with her neighbors and has become a patron to several Watch Hill community organizations. While the megastar reportedly owns eight properties across four states, this must feel like one of her “homes.” It also has an emotional connection because it’s part of her music catalogue.
The rumored wedding date is June 13, 2026 (13 is the pop star’s lucky number), an optimal season weather-wise in Watch Hill.
Depending on the size of the party, Ocean House may not be optimal because of its limited number of accommodations, especially those offering complete privacy. Ocean House ballrooms can accommodate hundreds of guests, and the venue offers the advantage of being only steps away from her private estate on Watch Hill, now known as Holiday House.
One major hurdle for an Ocean House wedding, depending on the guest list size, may be the venue’s scale. With only 49 rooms and 20 suites, the hotel offers intimate luxury, but perhaps not the capacity to accommodate a guest list that bridges the NFL and the music industry.
Rumors aside, Ocean House doesn’t need the Swift-Kelce nuptials to validate its unique appeal. From the private beach butler service to the historic charm of the cottages, it offers a level of bespoke service and grandeur that is increasingly rare in the U.S. Now might be the perfect time to book a spring stay to experience it yourself.
