Newly opened on June 1, 2015, Benguerra Island has been completely renovated by andBeyond, exuding a feel reflective of its unique location and African-Portuguese heritage. Benguerra Island is andBeyond’s first lodge in Mozambique.

Far from the madding crowds, Mozambique and specifically the Bazaruto Archipelago, is a very unexplored part of the world—in the middle of the Indian Ocean—making this opening particularly exciting. The archipelago is part of a national marine park that has been very well protected and preserved.

Forty years after Independence and over a decade after civil war, this region is really coming into its own as a travel destination. This is bolstered by the number of well-known luxury brands in addition to andBeyond (such as Singita, Anantara) that are moving in and investing in Mozambique as a tourist destination.

Benguerra was originally built in the 1980s and was the first lodge in the Bazaruto Archipelago. The location was chosen as the best spot on Benguerra Island and the entire archipelago. It is located on a deep-water channel and is well protected from harsh weather, and the surrounding area has rolling sand dunes, white beaches, a freshwater pond full of flamingoes, and a small local village.

andBeyond recognized the incredible location of the lodge and entered into a complete renovation to bring it back to its former glory. Rooms are large and there is an extensively updated choice of food and beverage offerings.
